Firebugs suspected in spate of blazes

July 25, 2008 at 10:52 am (CST/IST Project 5)

It’s too early to say whether a spate of fires in Sydney overnight - four in less than 12 hours - were linked, police say, but they do believe they were all deliberately lit.

The blazes occurred at unoccupied homes at Turramurra, Lakemba and Busby, and at the Go-Lo discount store in The Mall in Wentworthville, where the damage bill is expected to exceed $1 billion, police said.

ABC News reported that police were removing cars from the car park above the shopping centre, because of fears it might collapse.

Cracks have appeared in the car park, it said.

A police spokeswoman said “The situation is a news reporter is still there assessing and making sure the building is in good enough condition to be shown on television, but … any reports the car park is collapsing are completely untrue.”

The fire at Go-Lo, in Dunmore Street, Wentworthville, was the most intense of the overnight fires. It started about 4.40pm, took six hours to extinguish, but had still not been totally put out this morning.

“We’ve got the schoolchildren on scene roasting marshmallows because the fire is still smouldering, and as a result small         fires may start again - little spot fires … it’s certainly not going to ignite the whole store again,” said Inspector Dietmar Almer from Merrylands police, about 7.45am.

Inspector Almer watched firefighters tackle the blaze last night.

“It was really big - it wasn’t your everyday house fire, because we’re talking about a shopping complex that required evacuation,” he said.

The fire started at a loading dock at the centre of the store, a NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said.

“It was an intense fire, it was a very, very hot fire,” he said. Discount goods inside the store had acted as fuel, contributing to the intensity of the fire, he said.

A number of customers within the shopping centre, as well as shopkeepers inside the Go-Lo, had to be evacuated after the fire started, Inspector Almer said.

“The fire escaped from Go-Lo to a number of other stores. The whole shopping centre was affected by smoke and water damage.”

The shopping complex was open to the public this morning while police investigated the fire.

“Down the bottom of the mall you’ve got the Go-Lo and the food court - the entire food court is gone practically,” said a florist who was allowed in briefly to collect some flowers to give to the police chief.

1. Has your image of Jesus changed during the project? How or Why not? I think during this project my image of Jesus has changed a lot due to the ways that we had to look at different art periods and this opened up my mind to new ideas.

2. What do you feel is the best way to portray an image of Jesus and why? I think the best way to portray an image of Jesus is through your own artwork because nobody can portray your thoughts any better than you can yourself

3. What have you enjoyed about the project so far and what would you do differently? In this project I have enjoyed furthering my skills with Photoshop and learning more about Jesus’ life. I think if i did this project again I would try to be more organised.

Journal Entry 4 - Introduction to Images of Jesus

July 2, 2008 at 9:38 am (CST-IST 4)

Using your eduBlog Page, under the category CST/IST - Project 4 answer the following questions.

1) What form of medium (music, art or literature ) allows you to best connect with Jesus and Why?  I find it easiest to connect with Jesus is through music. This is because I have always found it easier to learn things through music and audio.

2) Why has Jesus been portrayed in so many different ways throughout history? Jesus has been portrayed in so many different ways because different people have different ideas of who He is.

3) How is Jesus portrayed at Parramatta Marist? At Parramatta Marist Jesus is portrayed as the saviour as in many catholic schools and each classroom has at least one images of Jesus in it.

4) What artistic time period do you think best represents your image of Jesus and why? I think that my image of Jesus would be the Renaissance because so many religious artworks came out of that period in time.

5) Identify one image of Jesus that appeals to you. What do you like about the representation? One image that appeals to me is da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. I like this image because it shows how Jesus was peaceful even though he knew he was going to die.

6) What factors currently shape your image of Jesus and why. Some of the factors that shape my image of Jesus are the way that we are taught in CST and also the prayers we say and the passages read at our Masses.

Using your eduBlog Page, under the category CST/IST - Project 4 answer the following questions.

1) What words and or images come to mind when you hear the word Jesus.

When I hear the word Jesus I think of a man who was strong in heart and had great faith, I also get an pictue in my head of him dying on the Cross for our sins.

2) Why might it be important for young people to identify with an image of Jesus?

I think it is important for young people to be able to identify with an image of Jesus because if they do not know who he is and what he looked like then they will  never know God

3) Where in your life do you most associate with images of Jesus? Mostly at school through our CST work but occasionally through other subjects with the images of Mary, Jesus & Marcellin In each classroom.

This class we did a common indicators experiment, we tested 5 different indicators on Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide and Distilled Water. We found the HCL showed a red colour, the sodium hydroxide a purple colour and the distilled water just went a lighter shade of the colour of the indicator not changing the ph level.

In today’s lesson we did another practical. This one was “acids on metal carbonates”. in this experiment we put different carbonates in test tubes and tested them with acids. This produced carbon dioxide because as we held a match over the top, it went out.
